Ball Valve Coating: Extend Valve Life

Eliminate galling and keep critical operations running at full efficiency.

""

Metal-seated ball valves are built to perform under pressure, but without the right surface protection, metal-to-metal contact between the ball and seat creates a predictable path to failure. Wear accumulates. Surfaces gall. Under high pressure, valves seize entirely, turning a routine maintenance issue into costly unplanned downtime. Linde AMT's ball valve coating services are designed to prevent that cycle from starting. By applying advanced tungsten carbide coatings with our proprietary HP/HVOF® thermal spray process, we extend valve service life, eliminate galling and keep critical operations running at full efficiency.

What Is Ball Valve Coating and Why Does It Matter?

A ball valve controls flow rate by rotating a spherical ball against a seated surface. In most industrial configurations, both the ball and the seat are metal, and that metal-to-metal contact is the source of most valve degradation. Every actuation creates friction. Corrosive media accelerate surface breakdown. High pressures amplify the damage. Over time, the result is wear, surface fatigue, and eventually galling, a condition in which mating metal surfaces cold-weld under pressure, making the valve impossible to operate.

Ball valve coating addresses these failure modes directly. A correctly applied coating creates a hardened, low-friction surface layer that separates the base metal from the operating environment. It reduces friction between moving surfaces, resists wear from repeated actuation, and provides corrosion protection. The coating does not change the geometry or function of the valve; it enhances the surface so the valve can do its job reliably for longer.

In demanding applications such as high-pressure pipelines, chemical processing systems, and high-temperature flow environments, an uncoated valve is often a liability. The right ball valve coating converts that liability into a long-service asset.

The Linde AMT Approach to Ball Valve Coating

Not all ball valve coatings are equal. Chemistry matters. The application process matters. And the precision with which a coating is deposited on a complex valve geometry matters enormously.

Our primary ball valve coatings are tungsten carbide, which prevents galling and protects against erosive and abrasive wear. Our primary ball valve coatings are tungsten carbide (WC-Co / WC-Ni / WC-Co-Cr / WC-CrC-Ni) and chrome carbide (Cr3C2-NiCr). Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials available for industrial surface applications. When applied as a coating, it delivers exceptional wear resistance, outstanding hardness, and low surface energy that prevent galling and protect against erosive and abrasive wear. For valves operating in corrosive environments, tungsten carbide coatings provide a dense, gas-tight barrier that resists penetration by aggressive media including water, oils, and mild acids.

The application process we use is HP/HVOF® (High-Pressure, High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel) thermal spray. In this process, coating material is fed into a high-velocity combustion stream and propelled onto the valve surface at supersonic speeds. The result is an exceptionally dense, well-bonded coating (>10,000 psi bond strength) with minimal porosity. That density is critical for valve applications: a porous coating allows corrosive media to migrate to the substrate, undermining the coating's protective function. The coating process is temperature-controlled, eliminating concerns about material distortion or deformation and the need for subsequent heat treatments.

Coatings are applied to both the ball and the seat, the two surfaces in direct contact. Coating only one surface produces uneven wear. Linde AMT coats both, ensuring the entire contact interface is protected.

Performance Benefits of Tungsten Carbide Ball Valve Coating

The measurable outcomes of a properly applied ball valve coating go well beyond surface protection. For engineers and operations managers evaluating coating services, tungsten carbide ball valve coatings deliver on several fronts:

  • Extended service life. Tungsten carbide coatings deliver wear resistance that significantly outperforms uncoated metal and hard chrome alternatives, reducing replacement frequency and lowering total cost of ownership.
  • Perfect sealing. Advanced finishing and lapping processes precisely mate the ball and ensure compliance with the most stringent valve leakage standards.
  • Elimination of galling and seizing. The hardness and low-friction characteristics of tungsten carbide prevent cold welding that can cause valve seizure under high pressure, ensuring reliable actuation even in safety-critical applications.
  • Corrosion resistance. In environments where valves are exposed to corrosive process media, seawater, or other chemically aggressive fluids, tungsten carbide coatings provide a dense protective barrier that prevents these substances from reaching the substrate.
  • Reduced maintenance downtime. Ball valve coating is a proactive investment in uptime, keeping valves in service and out of the maintenance queue.
  • REACH-compliant, chrome-free performance. Linde AMT ball valve coatings are free from hexavalent chromium and comply with REACH regulations, offering a high-performance, environmentally responsible alternative to hard chrome plating without compromising durability or protection.

Industries and Applications

Ball valve coating services from Linde AMT support operations across a broad range of industries where valve reliability is non-negotiable.

In oil and gas, ball valves operate under extreme pressures and in contact with corrosive hydrocarbons, produced water, and process chemicals. Valve failure in upstream or midstream applications can result in significant production loss and safety risk.

In chemical processing, valves handle aggressive acids, bases, and solvent environments where uncoated metal surfaces degrade rapidly, making a chemical-resistant surface essential. In power generation, high-pressure flow rate control systems rely on valve performance to maintain operational efficiency. Coated ball valves maintain tighter tolerances and more reliable actuation over longer service cycles.

In refining and petrochemical operations, abrasive media and elevated operating temperatures create challenging conditions in which tungsten carbide coatings must withstand thermal stress and abrasive wear simultaneously. In water treatment and distribution, corrosion-resistant ball valve coatings extend service life in environments where uncoated valves deteriorate quickly, and reliability has direct implications for public safety.

Why Linde AMT Linde?

AMT brings more than a coating process to every ball valve application; we bring a fully integrated materials and engineering capability built on more than 100 years of coatings innovation.

Our coating portfolio spans more than 300 formulations. When a standard tungsten carbide formulation is the right answer, we apply it with precision. When a specific operating environment demands something different a modified chemistry, an alternative binder, a custom process approach our R&D team has the depth to develop and validate a solution. That integration runs through everything we do:

  • We manufacture our own coating powders.
  • We engineer and hold patents on our application processes.
  • We operate coating service plants at 35 locations across 12 countries.
  • We maintain R&D facilities dedicated to developing new solutions for evolving customer challenges.

We are not a reseller applying someone else's materials with commodity equipment. We control the full value chain, from powder production to application to quality certification, which means tighter process control, better consistency, and greater accountability at every step.

Compliance is built into our portfolio. Our ball valve coatings are REACH-compliant and free of hexavalent chromium. We also offer alternatives to cobalt-based binders in our carbide formulations, ensuring our customers remain ahead of evolving regulatory requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ball valve coating?

Ball valve coating is the application of a protective surface layer, typically tungsten carbide, to the ball and seat components of a ball valve. The coating reduces friction, resists wear, and prevents galling, extending the valve's operational life in demanding industrial environments.

Why is tungsten carbide used for ball valve coating?

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials available for industrial surface applications. It delivers exceptional wear resistance, resists corrosive media, and provides the low-friction surface characteristics that prevent galling and seizing under high pressure, making it the preferred choice for ball valve coating in critical applications.

What application process does Linde AMT use for ball valve coatings?

Linde AMT applies ball valve coatings using our proprietary HP/HVOF® thermal spray process. This high-velocity application method produces dense, well-bonded coatings with minimal porosity, which is important for ensuring the coating performs as a reliable barrier against wear and corrosive media.
